I’m finding that one of the problems of being in school again is that it makes me think more, but I don’t have the time to do anything with what I’m thinking. This morning (it’s morning for me, okay?) I’m thinking about the little I know about Leni Riefenstahl, and wanting to know more, thinking about how rare it is for an artist – well, not writers, but other kinds of artist – to be viewed with such visceral antagonism for generations, and I’m thinking that it seems to me that the reaction is really created first, by her having been really good, and second by her having been a woman.
I’d like to push this around more, and discover that other people said the same thing 50 years ago or more, and that there has been all sorts of interesting research and discussion about her, and maybe other artists who have received similar popular responses. However, since my assigned reading isn’t done and I have a slew of papers coming up, it’s going to stay an idle thought.
